McAfee downloads locking up PC

Has anyone come across this before. My wife loves playing spider solitaire, if my MacAfee security suite starts downloading whilst she's playing everything starts running slow and my mouse becomes very hard to control. The only way I can get things back to normal is to reboot. This is when I find out it's MacAfee that’s the problem as it immediately starts to download updates. I’m on broadband use firefox as my browser, running XP home with a 2.5ghz processor and 512Mb ram. any help would be gratefully received, as she’s doing my head in.

sounds like a memory prob but unlikely in view 512 mem might there be some spyware hogging memory/cpu useage, what anti spyware do you have on board?

Spyboy S&D, a2, and MS's new beta version software all of which are giving me a clean bill of health

have you looked in task manager and checked under processes running to see what is hogging the most useage?

Tried to, but when this is happening I can't open task manager. I've left it for over an hour to see it it opens but to no avail
