I know this is meant for PC questions, but i thought i would have a stab in the dark here as computing is mathematics after all.I am trying to find if there are any maths forums online. I need to solve the following equation urgently: x - 5 1 ----- + - = 0 x + 1 xCAN ANYONE HELP ????(Showing workings out will win you EXTRA Brownie points with me)
I'm a Mathematician with a Masters in Maths.Sorry, but your equation doesn't make sense. Try again.
Not sure what the first part means, but surely 0x + 1x is 1x?
SorryIt should show (x-5) 1 . ----- + - = 0 . (x+1) x .OR ( x - 5 ) / (x + 1) + 1 / x = 0(in case PCA won't edit it correctly)
s99RajIt's meant to look like a quadratic equation(x-5) over (x+1) PLUS 1 over x which equals '0'
Aha! That's better. And dead easy too.If you hold on a second I'll tell you.P.S. How old are you? The question sounds like a typical GCSE question.
It's for my son and i haven't done these in 15 years or so
Multiply the whole thing by x(x+1) to give youx(x-5) + x + 1 = 0, which multiplies out to givex^2 - 4x = 1 = 0.Use the formula for a quadratic to get the two solutionsx = 2 + (Square Root of 2)orx = 2 - (Square Root of 2)
Whoops! I meantUse the formula for a quadratic to get the two solutions x = 2 + (Square Root of 3) or x = 2 - (Square Root of 3)
My typing's funny. Let's try again :Multiply the whole thing by x(x+1) to give you x(x-5) + x + 1 = 0, which multiplies out to give x^2 - 4x + 1 = 0.Use the formula for a quadratic to get the two solutions x = 2 + (Square Root of 3) or x = 2 - (Square Root of 3)The two solutions are about 3.732 or 0.268
