If you can put the CDrw on it's own channel as master and connect the DVDrom as slave to your hard drive i.e

Primary Master: HD
Primary Slave: DVDrom
Secondary Master: CDrw
Secondary Slave: None

thanks rick808,
i havent opened the case yet,but they are already installed on secondary channel, which should be master dvd rom or cdrw?,also if i dare to have a go at putting as slave to hard drive is that difficult?

It shouldn't hurt performance too much if you keep them on the same channel CDRW as Master, DVD Rom as slave.
It's not difficult to set up the DVD rom as slave to the HD, may well already be set as slave to the CDRW, check the jumper position on the back of the DVD rom and check it against the diagram that should be on the drive somewhere - the only hitch you may have is the position of the HD and whether the cable is long enough to reach both of the devices.

thanks rick808,
ill have a look, one other question if i click on the properties of the cdrw it has location 0 does that indicate anything?

As far as I remember it is the position on the ide controller i.e
Primary Master: (HD) would say - Location 0 (0)
Primary Slave: (DVDrom) - Location 0 (1)
Secondary Master: (CDrw) - Location 1 (0)
Secondary Slave: (None) - Location 1 (1)
