Making laptop quieter...

Im using a new AMD Turion 64 based laptop, which is great. I do however, like to leave it on during the evening, playing an animated screensaver. This however causes the fan to run which is quite intrusive. I assume this is because of the cpu heat. Therefore, is there a way I can force the cpu to throttle back to minimum to reduce fan noise?

The obvious thing is to allow it to power down using the power management options - why have your PC running on full power when you are not even using it?

If it's just for the sake of the animated screensaver, I am not sure what to suggest...

but that only affects the HDD and screen does it not? not throttle the cpu?

When the hard disk shuts down, the CPU will run slower and hence cooler!
