making an external hard drive

just brought a new hard drive by mistake, so I brought a HDD enclosure to make it into an external hard drive for storage.

however, windows explorer can not find it but in "device manager" hardware found it and says its working properly!

is there something I done wrong, why hardware device found it and windows explorer can't?

can any one help please

Have you formatted it yet? If not then do so, Explorer will then see it.

The drive needs to be "Partitioned" and given a drive letter before it will appear in Windows Explorer. It can then be formatted from within Windows Explorer by right clicking and selecting Format.

To partition the drive, go into Disk Management ("Start > Run", type DISKMGMT.MSC and click OK) then right click the drive for the options. You are looking for an option to Partition or possibly Initialise the drive.

Hi everyone,

many thanks for all of your inputs.

I think I sorted this problem so far, I went into disk management and assigned a drive letter and formatted it, then it works!this ia a laptop runs Vista.

however, I still got a couple of old desktop to do the same that runs XP.
