On Windows XP Start Up.

On starting am getting screen stating:

"We apologise for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this."

"If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders. Choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to most recent settings that worked."

"If a previous start up attempt was interrupted due to power failure or because the power or rest button was pressed. Or if you aren’t sure what caused problem. Choose Start Windows Normally

Options given:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (Your most recent settings that worked)

Start Windows Normally

Use the Up and Down arrows keys to move the highlight to your choice
Seconds until Windows starts: (The clock then counts down from 30 seconds)

I have tried every option. Pressing Enter at each Prompt.
Even allowing the thing to count down itself.

Have tried booting into Safe Mode, Holding down F8

And it still keeps coming back with the same screen.

Can you boot into the bios using the 'del' or F2 key?

If not:-

You will have to use the disk that came with the laptop to reinstall the operating system (restore disk). Inset the disk and reboot the PC. Select the option to 'repair'

This should over write the system files and if you are lucky not you data files...

Did not get a disc with the laptop it is a Dixons OEM Version.

Surge Protectors are no good if the power goes of, when Windows is Writting to the Disc. The Windows Start files are corrupt. If you can get to a Command prompt you may be able to run Restore

Have tried the "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" which I assume would get me into DOS.

Or Is there a specials key hold during start Up?

boot files are corrupt. Thx woodchip

Have downloaded the 6 boot disks from MS and put them on my 2Gb USB drive Hope.
Can I transfer to Laptop Making USB Drive as first start up option in Bios?

  woodchip 20:35 14 Feb 2007

Yes it may work that way or If you have a Memory stick, you could use that
