Low WiFi signal

Hi

I have two laptops, one personal the other work both sharing an ADSL Netgear router (but not at the same time.) The home laptop has an excellent range and can be used outdoors and is fitted with a factory fitted WiFi adaptor (AJP) but the work one has a PCMIA card adaptor which Im led to believe is state of the art (Cisco).
So why does the work laptop have such a low signal strenght and the range is poor? This appears to be the same for colleagues using identical WiFi
cards.
Thanks
Steve
