Lost internet connection

Hi - I've just been accosted in the street by an friend and dragged off to his PC which has lost the internet connection, possibly caused by the family doing something.

It's a Virgin set up, with a helpline at £1 a minute. He's connected via a modem and I've checked all the cables, turned the modem off and on, rebooted, had a look in Control Panel>Internet options. All the family members have their own settings and he doesn't know how to log on as Administrator as a friend of his son set it up.

Any idea what I can check/try/ask him about so he can get up and running again? He's go XP. I won't be able to get to the machine til this evening, so if anyone has any ideas, I can gather them up for later!

Just spotted the previous thread! I'll try that too, although my friend doesn't have a network.

Ideas still appreciated, but I'll keep an eye on the other thread too

Thanks for that - it appears to have been changed to an 1845 number at the beginning of July
