Lost HD following Acronis?

  badgery 14:33 24 Jan 2007

Can anyone help me? Got a new computer without Windows installed, and wanted to transfer my image using Acronis 8, that I had taken from my 'old machine'.
Everything seemed to be OK, loaded Acronis backup and XP, and re-activated by phone with MS.
Former Desktop and files came up and I was happy - until I tried to use Acronis to take an image, when I got an Error saying Acronis has not found any hard disk drives?!
At this point I ran Belarc and found that it had (under Drives):- 20.04 Gb usable HD capacity, 13.40 free Space. This was exactly the same as my previous computer C drive details (the image?).
Lower down it says: Disk Drive (82.34GB)----drive 0
The new computer is supposed to be 80Gb, so I'm thinking that's where the 82.34 comes from?
Under 'Local Drive Volumes' it says c: (FAT32 on drive0) 20.04Gb 13.40GB free.
Can anyone give any guidance on how I can find, and use, the 80GB? I'm lost!!

Looks as though you need to set your new drive to Primary. Go into Setup and make sure that your 80gb drive is set to Primary and is set to Auto not Off. If you still have the other drive turn it to Off

There could be a number of explanations.

The most significant is that acronis does was it says it does. It images your (old) PC including all the settings, drivers and so on for your old machine. If (as is likely) your new machine has different hardware and drivers then the image will not be designed for that machine.

In some ways it's surprising it works at all.

Thanks, rawprawn, how do I get to setup? I feel I should know, but the mind is spinning at present!!

Press F2 on boot, did you "clone" the drive or just make a backup image?

Got to setup but what I saw didn't make much sense, will go back to a darkened room for a spell!
Cheers, anyway - I really shouldn't keep fighting this. How do I go about wiping the whole lot and giving up on Acronis, just load up XP and take the long road?

Sorry, we crossed.
It was an Acronis backup image.

I thought that if you cloned the drive it could be tranfered to a new drive. Am I wrong?

It's a good idea to print out the instructions before starting.

OK I see, it only applies to a new disc on the same compter. Thanks.
