lost hard drive space

i partioned my 640gb drive using the linux based parted magic livecd/usb and put in os and when i started pc again in vista it reads the whole drive as only 596gb someone told me linux can do something to your drive to cause this and windows cant see it so i put in a disc with linux mint and it saw the whole 640gb does anyone know how this happened and particularly whay i can do to get bk my missing 40gb.

640,000,000,000 / 1024 / 1024 / 1024 = 596[GB]

alrite guys thanks alot for clearing that up never really noticed before just assumed you would get the whole 640gb it showed have to recalc my partions.

You are getting the whole 640GB, as brundle and bremner have both already pointed out, see the article at click here

They use 1000Mb as a Gig. But a full Gig is 1024Mb that means they are selling things under false pretenses. they have done this for years, it called Highway Robbery
