Lost Emails After Compacting

Outlook Express offered to 'compact' the inbox in one of my identities. I've done this several times before without problems, but now there are no emails shown in the inbox.

I checked the identity folder and the original inbox is still there with 6.5MB of data in it, but OE has created a second inbox 'Inbox (1)' which now appears to be the default inbox.

I've tried importing the original inbox into the identity, and deleting the new inbox but without success. The new inbox works OK, but I'd really rather prefer my old one with all my emails back!

My other identities work OK. How can I restore my original inbox as the default inbox?

I'm running OE6, XP home, ZoneAlarm Suite, and all are fully up to date & patched.

Any help would be much appreciated.
