When i turned PC on Friday night i found that both my CD-rom and my DVD/CDRW drive have vanished from Xp Home.

I can verify that there is actually nothing wrong with the drives, as i swapped my HDD out and replaced it with my old one, running WinME, and it recongnised them fine, and they worked Ok too.

I have tried several times to uninstall the drivers. Xp then auto detects them, and reinstalls the drivers, but the problem remains.

they are both showing in device manager with a yellow '!' and the text

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device

I have followed the trouble shooter through, to no avaial.

Many thanks for the Help,

D.

Sounds like corrupt drivers the original ones are in the i386 folder on the XP CD I think

Uninstall drivers and start to re install,

do not let XP find drivers but instead point it to the i386 folder on the XP CD to install the drivers from there.

Unfortunatly, as i can't access either of my CD drives, i can't install the uncorrupted drivers off of a cd!

OK had a bit of a C.R.A.F.T. moment on that one glad youv'e got them back.

Why do I read so many posts of problems caused by Norton?
