Lost access

I lost access to my ISP last evening, and this morning retained one I discovered that for reason mystifying the DNS numbers has absented them selves.
Putting them back in - got me up and going.
This has happened before, so for this reason I have then writ large on the wall.
What causes them to drop out I wonder?
Discussing this with the ISP help line- the guy in Belfast suggested it is possible to do with my Broadband modem[Voyager 105] is struggling to cope with the 8 Mbps connection.
Is this a likely scenario?
Should I change it for a more modern one?
This is a single machine therefore wireless connectivity is not a requirement

Used to have the same usb modem a while ago and it would suffer 'drop-outs'. I had to log in to my ISP to connect to the net so invested in an Ethernet modem. This meant that I had an 'always on' connection and was much more stable. It doesn't need drivers but has to be set up to your ISP's configuration. Something like this; click here .
Don't know why the DNS addresses disappear though.
