Loss of AC97 sound

I have run my system using on board AC 97 [Jetway 867AS Mobo] for 18 months. Recently, I fitted a 4.1 sound card which ran v well. After a couple of weeks my system froze 2 or 3 times - to try and identify the culprit I removed the sound card and reverted to ac 97 for a week. I then repeated this procedure and, after I removed the card a second time, I could not get the AC 97 to work. After trying everything, I re-formatted my OS partition and re-installed Windows - again with no AC 97 sound.

Windows "sees" the AC 97 in Device Manager ok[indeed if I disable AC 97 in the BIOS it disappears then comes back when I re-enable it] and says the device is working but I can get nothing out of the speakers.

V grateful for any help in what to try next.

Would this be a Via chipset?

Yes - Via KT-266.

Any clues?

I assume the speakers are mains powered. Tap the tip of the plug that goes into the sound card to check the speakers.

Speakers are A OK - work fine with the modem and when I fit the sound card.

Somehow I have lost the AC97 output from the Mobo????

You need to load the drivers from the Motherboard CD

Strange indeed! Your best bet would be to find out what is causing the freeze and then use the 4.1.

Have you looked in the event log?

This could solve my prob too. Please would someone kindly tell me which drivers on the motherboard disc do I need to reinstall [currently making do with dowloaded but have lost Roland midi]?

Has the onboard sound been disabled inadvertently in the BIOS?
