I have posed this problem previously but did not get a resolve, meanwhile a chum who followed in my footprints has now the same problem, with alomost certainly the same cause.
A USB hard drive was aquired.
It came with software called Intellistor.
XP did not like for me nor did Win 2000 for my chum.
We both took it out.
The drives work fine as they should without.

However in each case when starting the computer
after P.O.S.T and before the 'Starting Windows'/Resume Windows progress bar the 'C' drive goes into a prolonged grind as if frantically searching for ...... What?
All Registery and types of scanning/cleaning have been carried out, so far to no effect.
Any Ideas please.

Type

msconfig

into the run box select the tab Boot.INI

Should read something like:

[boot loader]

timeout=5

default= multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partion(1)WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partion(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Took a look it said just that
But so what /
I guess I am looking to alter somwething somewher or
take something out or put it in
On start to day I got the black screen uption
[after the long grind] Start Xp
or
Install XP

Never seen that before.
I selected Start XP - this time next time I start if it comes up I hit install and see what happens
