local area network cable unplugged

This is the error message I get with my WAN, using linksys WAG54G ADSL gateway and WUSB54G network adapter.

The screen then displays "you are connected to the access point but the internet cannot be found". (this is on second machine and laptop, connection is fine on the main machine).

Apart from the obvious oddity (there are no cables!!!), this is maddening cos I've done everything suggested by Linksys to fix it (disabling firewalls, setting static IP on the remote machines, etc) plus followed the advice of a couple of people on here with network connection settings and XP settings.

Whatever I do, it still says "local area connection network cable unplugged". Any enlightenment?

Are you sure you have enabled wireless broadcasting from the WAP (wireless access point)?
Is the laptop configured to look for the SSID that the WAP is broadcasting?
Is DCHP set to automatic on the laptop?

1. There's no network card on the motherboard.

2. Wireless broadcasting is enabled properly (the network is working in place with all the wireless gear talking to each other - but no internet on the remote machines)

3. Laptop is looking for the correct SSID.

4. DHCP is enabled on the laptop.

It's a Dell Latitude D600. The other PC is a bespoke model my son had made for gaming.

....but the error message about the network cable is the same on both, and the wireless network is connected on both, yet neither can connect to the net!

Thanks for the heads-up on the Dell - it's from a previous job and I've got no paperwork on it at all.

The ipconfig results are -
Windows 2000 IP config
Host name : 82x2z0
Primary DNS suffix : [company name]
node type : hybrid
IP routing enabled : no
WINS proxy enabled : no

Ethernet adapter local area connection 2
connection-specific DNS suffix : [blank]

physical address : 00-0C-41-c7-66-74
DHCP enabled : yes
autoconfig IP address : 169.254.18.109
Default gateway [blank]
DNS servers [blank]

ethernet adapter local area connection
media state : cable disconnected
description : broadcom 570x gigabit integrated controller
physical address : 00-0d-56-79-eb-e0

(assuming I can read my own writing!)

thanks again.

Yes that is blank - what should it say?

  Gaz 25 22:40 09 Jul 2004

192.168.1.1

  lpg 22:44 09 Jul 2004

192.168.1.1 is the local address of the router - how (if at all)can the other machines be made to recognise this, if this is the problem?

  lpg 22:55 09 Jul 2004

Yes, DHCP is enabled on the router.

I could understand if there was some company-based lock-out on the laptop, but the other PC gives exactly the same messages and it's a bespoke machine with nothing untoward on there.......

  lpg 23:01 09 Jul 2004

Thanks I'll try that. Maybe not tonight!

Setting static IP addresses was one thing Linksys themselves suggested but I don't think it was with DHCP disabled, so......

I'll update this tomorrow -thanks for your help.
