Check to see if the connectors have come loose: either its power supply or the connector to the mobo.

Is the CD recognised in the device manager? The BIOS?

does your friend actually use it for VCD's etc...if so...is he/she using nero?...if so are they using the "overburn" function...if again the answer is yes then they could of well knackered there drive.....need more info on its past use and what software you are running.

If it was working and suddenly stopped working, and the rest of the computer is ok, then the probability is that the cd rewriter has failed. The cd read driver is part of Windows. Is there a second cd-rom drive, if that is working normally, then the Windows driver is ok.

the software being used is nero.

The drive is recognised in Device Manager.
And the connectors are fully in.

I have reinstalled Nero
and tried B's recorder still no luck.
Could the drive need replacing.

Sounds like it may need replacing; do you have the option to try it in another machine or try a different drive in that machine before buying a new one?
