Going to dual boot my laptop windows xp & linux.
But which make of linux do i go for?
Only ever used a live cd before and that was a year or 2 ago.
Any versions good for a novice?

I like Linux Mint for new users.

Try the live CD and see if you like it.

If you're happy with 32 bit, try the Debian variant. click here

Otherwise, if you want 64 bit, use the standard edition.

You could try different ones by creating live CD's before loading any to hard drive to see which one you like click here

After Creating the Live CD you just boot with it and it loads to memory, not hard drive and runs from that. So you cannot catch any Virus etc as when you close the PC its gone
