There are various "distributions" (flavours) of Linux available. All have their fans. You can actually get Linux on a "Live" CD/DVD basis which means you put it in your machine and boot from it without having to install anything on your PC. It is slower but gives you the general idea.
I've tried this with both "Knoppix" and "Ubuntu".
