cheers for your suggestion

thats not it!

i can't even get to the windows update site, by clicking start/windows update

it just loads tries to load and then get the no page displayed.

the funny thing is that link you posted works

i have tried the recommendation from ms, as i have explained above..just can't figure this out

windows update is very busy at the moment with everybody downloading the latest patch.

try start/run type "sfc /scannow"(insert your windows cdrom if prompted to do so) maybe.

also try in internet explorer tools/internet options/security and set to default/medium.

open outlook express click tools/accounts/your account/properties/connection and untick the "always connect using" box (will then use internet explorers settings to connect)

i dont have any software for my isp it is setup manually

internet options are set to default

reluctant to use sfc /scannow as this restores all the system files including dll's back to the early version of xp, and not service pack..i havn't got the i386 from the service pack archived on my sfc /scannow will probably ask for service pack disk..

  hugh-265156 15:55 11 Feb 2004

sfc wont affect your sp1 or other updates unless they are corrupt or missing.

when sfc /scannow starts it asks for the xp disk

so it can copy dll files from the disk to the dll to me thats says that it will overwrite any files in there..hence having to re-install service pack or any other updates that may have updated dll's etc

we will see going to do it now

sfc /scannow keeps throwing a message up. please insert the xp cd which it is, and it will continue for a bit, then throw the message again.

so i have put the cd in the other drive.see if it makes a diff,so far so good

completed sfc /scannow and still the same problem
