Limited or no connectivity

I have a new PC running Windows XP with all the updates.

At the bottom right of the screen, whenever I boot up, I get a message saying I have "Limited or no Connectivity" on a local area connection. I have no network installed, and can access the internet okay through my BT Voyager 100 modem, but I'd like to get rid of the message.

I've tried to repair the problem in Start > Settings > Local Area Connection. It reports the same problem as the message at the bottom of the screen, resets my PC's IP address (whatever that is), and tells me to contact my network administrator if the problem persists. But the message is still there next time I boot up and, as I said, I'm not connected to any local network.

So, how do I cure it, please?

All Programs/Connect to/Right click on Local Area Connection/untick notify me when this connection............?
