Which is one of the reasons I use a surge protector that includes a connection for my router. Not saying it will save my PC but it'll hopefully help.

A Surge protector is a help but the only sure fire protection[direct hit excepted of vourse] is to shut down and disconnect from phone and mains whilst the storm is overhead or nearby.
The EMP from a near strike will jump across all protection.

Very good advice.
I lost a system earlier this year possibly to do with the lighting,my mobo and psu fried.

I have since rebuilt this and now try to protect it via a surge protector.
However the best advice is to pull the plugs and wait for it to blow over.
