LCD TV as monitor

I notice some LCD are now shown that they can be used as a monitor.
When watching TV we are normally say 8 feet away but the computer is worked on from say 12 inches -
does it automatically change focus when used as a PC screen?
Are these TV/PC screens as good as dedicated monitors?

According to my cousin who has done this says the picture is excellent on his 51 inch LCD TV, but he had to alter the resolution to 800 x 600 to get the picture right.

Just to let you know, I have a PC set up with two screens. One is a 'standard' flat Videoseven 19" monitor, the other is a 20" HD compliant LG Flatron M203WA LCD Monitor TV. The latter is set to it's highest possible resolution level, and the clarity is superb.
