I saw this morning on ZD Net that Microsoft had released new patches and even tho' I have configured auto update I logged on to Windows update tohave a look. I was informed that there were three critical updates for my machine and opted to download/install them. I have done this three times and each time the operation fails just after the download has finished. I installed SP 2 a few weeks ago and all has been fine. There are no problems with my machine. System is basically an Athlon 1300 with bags of memory and hard drive space. Anyone else having problems? Has SP2 itself made the windows update process more difficult for the best of motives. I'm baffled.
I'm also baffled by these new 'critical' updates. I haven't installed SP2 and dont intend so doing but am I supposed to install these latest ones and, if so, how? When I go to Windows update I'm told to download BITS which I'm reluctant to do. Will it foul up my system or assume that downloading BITS is a prelude to loading SP2 or will it therefore allow me to download the latest updates without installing SP2.
I know I'm being dense here but could someone tell me whether I really need all these updates? I haven't installed SP2 yet, but I will do so shortly but apart from SP2 Microsoft seems to want me to download all these:-
Security Update for Windows XP (KB841356)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB834707)
Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB841533)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB840987)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB873376)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB833987)
Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (KB883357)
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Download size: 10.2 MB, 31 minutes
All this will take about an hour to download and I don't have broadband! Please could someone tell me what I need and what I don't?
