At the same time Yes with internet connection sharing.How do you want to connct the laptop to the desktop?You can connect using a crossover cable or if the desk top and laptop both have wireless facilities you can connect wirelessly to the laptop.
Yes you should be able to share it though a network. I have done it but some time ago, you may find there are more up to date people in the Networking forum if you repost there.
get a router to replace the Broadband modem that will enable you to share the connection with no messing about with unreliable windows internet connection sharing!netgear dg834 is a good 1!click here
