laptop won't talk to router

I have connected a new laptop to the internet via a new Netgear DG834G router, but while it works fine with the ethernet cable attached, it will not work wirelessly. The laptop is wireless enabled, but I cannot get it to communicate with the router. I have a Netgear USB adapter WG111 but this has not solved the problem. Do I need it anyway? All helpful suggestions gratefully accepted!

You should not need the Netgear USB adapter. Disconnect the ethernet cable and disable the local area connection in network connections. You should then have one monitor icon in your sys tray. Right click it and scan for available networks. if yours shows the pick connect.

Have you entered the correct security key for the roter on the laptop?

Click start/run
Type in services.msc
Scroll down to wireless zero and make sure its running, this will enable the laptops onboard wireless card

You may also require a key combination to switch on the wireless card.

FN+F1 is used on certain makes of laptop.
