Laptop wont boot up

  Ironside02 19:09 15 Oct 2008

I have an Acer Aspire5710.
When I turn it on the ACER screen is displayed for a few seconds but then the screen goes blank, except for a curser in the top left corner and the the cd drive makes a noise for a second.

Any suggestions?

try pressing f8 as you start laptop to start in safe mode,if successful pick last known good config.
also if you have any discs in drives - remove them also remove any usb items and try reboot.
if this is of no help try Pressing f2 whilst starting to access bios and make sure the boot order is cdrom then hard drive.
how long does cursor stay on screen does anything else happen?
have you installed anything software/hardware?
are you running vista

F8 doesn't work.
F2 shows cdrom then IDE 0: Toshiba MK1237GSX-(S1) which I assume is the hard drive.
The curser stays on the screen - until I switch of the power - nothing else happens.

Try pressing f5 for safe modeat startup then last good config.
When the cursor flashes can you type anything onscreen?
do you have a vista/xp cd/dvd?

f5 does has no effect - nor do any of the other f keys.

I dont have a vista dvd, It came pre loaded.

Have you disconnected everything from the laptop?
printers / usb etc also turn off wireless

Also try removing mains power and the battery at the same time and leave for about 1 hour plug in mains adapter only reboot if it starts let it start up properly leave running a few minutes then shutdown reconnect battery, reboot

Tried booting it without the battery but no luck.

Looks like it needs to go in for repair.

All new pc's & lap tops do come with the os installed, but nowadays you have to make ur own backups either on 7 cd's or 2 dvd's. Seems you have had a major failure there, is it still under warranty if so send back.
