please help if possible. friends laptop won't start up get a black screen with the message

windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows set up using the original setup CD-ROM

however, no matter what i try it will not boot. recovery console does not work and neither does trying to boot in safe mode. unfortunately my pal has no back up or windows cd. nothing like that was supplied by the sellers.any suggestions or do you think the hard drive is goosed? thanks

Sounds as though you have a corrupt registry file, go here to see if this helps, click here

Good Luck.

No, that error message doesn't mean that the hard drive is goosed, it means that the registry is corrupt. To cure the problem follow these instructions click here As your mate doesn't have an XP CD or (I'm guessing) a floppy disk drive to use the 6 Microsoft setup floppies click here, he will probably have to borrow the XP CD from someone to access the Recovery Console.
