laptop wont access internet

Hi there, we are new to networking and are really struggling. Any advice would be most welcome.
We have bought a Btvoyager 2091 router for the main home computer. This is up and running fine. We bought a bt voyager 1020 adapter for the laptop. It says it is connected to the router. The router shows that the laptop is connected, however we can not actually open anything on the laptop. It just displays the page "this page can not be displayed".

Any body got any ideas what we are doing wrong.

1) Is that a dreaded USB adapter, or PCMCIA?

2) Are you certain that you need an external adapter? Is your laptop not wifi enabled?

3) Please tell us what firewall each PC has.

4) How have you set up the adapter? Driver-only, or run by software? Driver-only is often best if you have troublw with a USB adapter.

5) Have you run the Windows Network Setup Wizard on both PCs?

6) What connections are listed in the Network Connections folder?

thanks for the reply. We are pretty new to computers so will try to answer the questions as best we can.

The adapter is a bt voyager 1020 pcmia

yes we need an external adapter

main computer has zone alarm firewall, laptop has none

adapter set up run by software

Yes run the network wizard.

Will check what connections are listed.

Just to add the router is a bt voyager 2091. The main computer is running windows 2000, the laptop is running 98se.

We have just managed to connect our daughters pc upstairs using a usb adapter.

If you are running Win2K and 98SE, then I'll have to leave your query for someone with experience of networking these operating systems. I haven't used either of these since the day that XP went on sale, and have never had the - potentially hard - task of networking them!

Sorry that I can't help you any further with it.

thanks for trying.

First step in solving wireless problem is to get everything working by wire (ethernet), so wire the computers/laptops to the router for this.

Disable ALL software firewalls during setup (2091 has a hrdware firewall). Have you set internet options connection to never dial a connection, and LAN to auto?

Temporarily disable the wireless connection in the laptop for doing this, right click disable in netowrk connections.

Thanks for all your help.

Finally solved the problem.

The laptop did not have enough ram. It only had 32, upgraded to 96ram, this then enabled us to install windows xp. Everything installed and ran first time. Now got a good connection.

Thanks again.
