Laptop will not remember date and time.

A friend has asked if I will investigate why his 18 month old laptop will not remember the date and time. Everything works fine; it’s just a pain at boot up to have to reset it every time.

Like standard PC’s could it be the small silver battery attached to the motherboard that has died, or would that also affect other things as well. I believe his main battery will not hold a charge either.

Finally the laptop is out of warranty so is this a component a competent user could replace, or is it a back to the manufacturers job?

Thank you to everyone who answers as always.

All depends on the laptop as to how easy it is to change the battery. `

there is a chance that it is the bios battery but that usually shows up with a warning of some kind often a little tiresome fault like a boot fail or something. If the main battery is dead and the bios battery is weak then without mains power the clock may be affected. It is more normal for the clock to get slow frequently needing adjustment.
