Laptop turns off before POST

Acer Aspire 5741 Win 7 (64) i3 350M 3Gb Son's laptop will not turn on for longer than a few seconds. Blue power light comes on fans whirr but then turns off with nothing at all showing on the screen. Have tried with and without battery. Have opened up and checked connections but all seem fine. Made sure memory seated correctly. Son did drop machine but can see no obvious damage when Iook at Motherboard. This does sound like a hardware problem but would like any further thoughts before i decide to repair or replace the machine. Thanks.

immediate shutting down usually means overheat

I suspect the drop may have caused the heat sink /fan to come adrift of the cpu

service manual shows how to disassemble.

Thanks for response Fruit Bat. Son and I scoured the Motherboard but couldn't see anything amiss. All connectors seem to be correct and fan briefly turns before shut down.

TRy reseating all peripheral equipment such as mem cards wireless card hard drive DVD drive etc. might also be worth light and refitting the cpu.
