Laptop- trouble starting up.

  leedaz 12:48 19 May 2006

My girlfriends work laptop is very unstable at the moment, it won't start windows up all of the time, and when it does, it only lasts 5 mins. then BSOD.
It's a Toshiba Satellite Pro..XP Pro, 2.5GHz Intel Celeron with MK3021GAS HDD 27.9GB and it says 240 MB RAM ?? (In system properties). Her (school) IT Dept. say the HDD is damaged, but I can't understand why it boots sometimes. (she bought it from an outside supplier so the IT Dept. won't fix it for her)

Just started it up for the 1st time myself and ran disk error to phase 4 and BSOD. Which said.....

Problem detected windows will shut down to prevent damage to your computer..

STOP 0x00000077 (0xC000006E , OxC000000E , 0x0007E000) (I think that was it!!)
I pressed CTRL ALT DEL to restart....which got me to a black screen with blinking cursor at home...then message after 1 min. A DISK ERROR OCCURRED PRESS CTRL ALT DEL To restart. Doing this now continually gets me back to same place(black screen with this message).
Hope someone can make sense of this post and help me out a bit..Why does windows report 240 MB ram ?
I'm guessing should be 256.No point asking the GF 'cos she only uses it and doesn't care about what goes on inside(unlike me). Thanks in advance for any help.

In the 10 mins. it took me to type that, computer was off..just tried again and it booted to win xp..just a thought, this problem started on that very hot day last week we had 26 C here and her laptop was on all day (though not in use all day) poss. a heat problem started it?

STOP 0x00000077 (0xC000006E , OxC000000E , 0x0007E000)

should read .........

STOP 0x00000077 (0xC000006E , OxC000000E ,0x00000000 , 0x0007E000)

Will it start in safe mode? Press F8 at startup and choose from the menu?

" Why does windows report 240 MB ram ?
I'm guessing should be 256."

The on-board graphics chip is probably 16Mb, this will come out of the 256Mb.

256 - 16 for shared graphics = 240

Yes, thats what I said isn't it? ;-)

ed-0 Thanks..yes that could be it.
Diodorus Siculus Thanks for the reply, I've found that page and a couple more like it, it does seem to be a pagefile/(HDD) problem but not sure how to interpret the error code. but could also be RAM or broken fan (heat) according to some other sources.

will try to re-seat RAM or swap it out and see what happens. Thanks anyway I'll report back later.

If you can see this image it's the back of pc with fan cover off.this fan should be spinning non stop I take it? It isn't but it does spin foe 20 secs or so on start up, also getting stable results with cover off and pc on it's side, disk check passed phases 1- through 3, testing 4 as I type. gotta go to work now
will check back later.

edit pc still working... longest session to date, seems here lies the problem? why would fan spin for only 20 secs, then stop? Bios setting? it can't be broken can it?
