Laptop startup password

I have followed advice and put a password on my laptop runnning XP Home at startup. It is about 20 characters long and includes upper and lower case letters, special characters and numbers. It also is completely random having no relationship to me or my hobbies etc. However, if the machine was stolen how much of a deterrent would this be? Would the machine be dismantled for it's bits? Can the code be cracked?
