Laptop Standby?Hibernate/Sleep Advent 7113

Just reinstalled Vista onto Advent 7113 laptop, boots up OK and seems to function in all respects. However I left it running on two occasions and returned to find that the mouse/cursor had disappeared and the desktop clock was showing some twenty minutes earlier. I had to press and hold the On/Off button to switch off and then back on again. The screen came up indicating that Windows had not closed down properly and I selected start Windows normally. I feel that this maybe something to do with Sleep/Hibernate/Standby perhaps. Can’t quite get my head around that, - if that is what it is. On my earlier laptops I dispensed entirely with these functions.
Any comments?

Thanks for that. Makes sense. I had completely forgotten all the options for power saving. Comes with age and senility.

You are a youngster I'm 77 nearly 78 so my claim to senility has justification.
