laptop on standby is this OK

When I am not using my laptop (Vista), I usualy just shut the lid and leave it on standby for a quicker start up. I only shut down completely when I am leaving it for more than a couple of days.
What are the consequences of this, and how long can you safely leave it on standby without shutting down.

When I just shut the lid, does this put the laptop in Standby, Sleep or Hibernate.
I have an Acer Travelmate.

It could be either. Depends on the settings.

Not sure in Vista but under XP The settings are in 'Control Panel' 'Power managment' Mine go to standby. I've never had any problems with my 3 year old Toshiba.

Although I do like to 'shut down sometimes.

Control panel > power options > coose what closing the lid does. Change to what you want.

I always use hibernation. I've never manually shut down unless windows update asks for one.

It saves all open windows and internet, if you want it to.

It boots in a couple of seconds and hiberates in the same time.
