Laptop screen to act as a monitor

I want to use my laptop as a monitor to my desktop's tower for space reasons really..I want to be able to hook up my laptop to act as a normal monitor would. I would use a seperate mouse and keyboard that came with the desktop.
so just to make myself really clear :) the laptop would do nothing but act as a screen. Is there anyway I could do this?

To connect a digital LCD screen to an analog VGA interface you'll need a mixed-signal microcontroller communicating with the panel to translate the analog VGA inputs into the digital signals used in the LCD. There's some pretty complex circuitry involved in this. The commercially available 15-18" LCD panels with SVGA inputs do exactly that, but again, they are expensive and mostly feature proprietary designs. And don't forget that you will also need to write a driver for the newly created hardware.

This software does it - I've used it in a classroom situation and it works.
