Laptop Light off

  gav223 16:20 01 Feb 2011

My mother has a laptop and all of a sudden it has stopped working.

The light doesn't come on with either the battery or mains.

She has given it to someone and they have said that the motherboard has gone.

The same symptoms happened to me a few years ago and it was a faulty part where the jack is inserted.

I just assumed that even though the motherboard is faulty, the light would still come on to show that there's power getting to it.

Would this happen.

Many thanks.

Power supply card can be part of motherboard

If power supply card / portion is dead then no LED

Check if jack socket is loose where power cable connects

charge battery in another machine and retry in yours

Thanks Fruit Bat /\0/\.

I just wanted to make as my parents don't have a clue and didn't want this person ripping them off.

He has said that as the motherboard has gone it is not worth repairing as it will cost around around £250.

Yes if motherboard is dead then not worth repairing.

but keep the hard drive you can use in a caddy and retrieve files to another machine.
Memory chips may also be reusable or sold on ebay
screen can also be sold on all helps cut cost of a replacement.

Jack plug replacement is cheaper approx £85 cost is due to labour and amount of time it takes to strip and rebuild the machine.
