My laptop is dead!! The power cord in the unit has broken. So I have borrowed another laptop and tried to put my hard drive into it. All was fine untill the windows logon screen. When I try to logon I get a message that says the copy of of windows must be activated before i can logon, contact system administartor. My hdd has a genuine copy of windows on it and I have the product key, so is there any way to solve this problem?

Try booting up into safe mode choose the "with network support" from the menu should allow you to connect and activate XP, assuming that this laptop is the same make and model as the last one

Windows thinks it is on another machine because you have put your drive into another laptop, thats why its asking to reactivate.

To access your data on the drive you need to connect the HDD into an external caddy such as click here and connect to the USB port on another machine.
