laptop hard drive upgrade

hi sorry if this has been talked about everywhere else, but i couldnt see it anywhere.
i have just purchased a new hard drive for my acer travelmate 2410.
the problem is im not sure how i go about getting all my data from my old hard drive to the new one.
thanks for any help!

Easiest way is to

1 put new drive in an external caddy and cnnect via USB.

2 Clone old drive to new drive using acronis true image or simular program.

3. fit new drive in laptop and check it boots ok

4 fit old drive in external caddy and format and keep for backing up etc.

mm... i dont have one of those caddy things, if i make a backup disk, can i use that and then put the rest on later?
