I have the Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop. When I move the lid the screen flickers. This has just started lately

Get it check as the ribbon cable from the PC to the display is starting to fail

I notice that if I hold screen it stops flickering. What is ribbon cable.

It is a flat plastic flexible cable with many fine copper strips that make the connect between the display and the pc

These would sometime break and cause flicker or no display.

If you hold the screen it will show but if you remove you hand, start to flicker again mean that the contact is making when you hold the screen

Sometime you can get the screen to show when the screen is at a certain angle it all depend on how many contracts are broken

You must change the ribbon cable any Dell service center can do it in a short period of time

Would I be able to replace this myself as it may be just out of warranty.

I would not try it myself on laptops if it was a desktop I would repair it myself.

Having been in the electronics service business for the last 30 years

Even in the company that I work for we get Dell to fix the laptop that we have over 20

Accessing the laptop you can cause more harm than good

Dell service center have the correct tools to access
the laptop
