laptop fan runs continuously

  oldbeefer2 19:35 09 Nov 2008

The continuing sag of my new Dell. having had all sorts of problems, have been forced into a complete reinstall. Went OK once I realised I had to reinstall drivers as well. Up and running now, but the fan runs all the time (medium speed). Sitting on a table - doesn't feel hot. Does it on mains and battery. Didn't do it before. Any bright ideas please? Vista home premium.

Go into Task manager and see if anything running that should not be.If nothing running system Idle process should be showing about 97%.Probably not enough Memory.

Inspiron 1525. System idle 95 to 98. No applications running. Hard drive fairly quiet. Underside feels cool. 2GB memory. Was fine until the reinstall (apart from other problems which Microsoft are trying to help me with).

Going to switch it off now. Will check back in the morning. Thanks.

Did you install all the drivers plus the Dell Notebook System Software and Vista Power Management Settings from the dell web site

I hadn't, but I have now and the fan is behaving as it should. Many thanks for the tip. All I have to look forward to now is another 2 hrs with a MS technician tomorrow evening trying to find out why the laptop restarts after the lid has been closed!

Have you checked the power setting for when the lid is close there should be options to "Do Nothing, Standby, Shut Down, Etc

Yes. It's set to 'sleep', and it did - until I installed SP1. That's what's got MS interested. Luckily, SP1 related problems are being dealt with for free - they even call me, and when they say they will! (at least so far).
