Laptop failure after USB storage inserted

  timothywilliam 21:02 01 Jun 2007

My wife has a new Laptop with XP, but very few programmes and no games or internet connection.
The other day she had a screen saver on screen and prematurely inserted a USB device with many photos on it into the Laptop with the intention of downloading. The Laptop, from ScreenSave showed Desktop icons, then froze and there was no mouse available. A AOL icon flickered constantly in the screen centre. Re-Start seems impossible. I have tried switching on and off, F8 at start up, Ctrl/Alt/delete and shouting at it- all to no avail. She cannot get an opening desktop screen.
The screen is not the blue death colour, just normal Desktop without any icons or Mouse. Any advise please ?

Either press and hold the start button or remove the battery, leave it out for a minute or two and then refit it.

Be careful not to short the battery terminals whilst moving it or when it`s out.

onto a Pen Drive, with all the latest updates, and then run it on your Wife's Laptop.

Many moons ago Viruses used floppies as their primary way of spreading, the same may have happened to her through the USB Device.
