Laptop DVD/CDRW drive, CD no work

NEC CB2100A Laptop internal DVDRom/CDRW drive works fine with DVDs. Cannot read CDs, makes a noise like it is stuck - repeats.

Is this a sign of its death or can it be healed?

Please help, thanks.

You could try a cleaner disk in the drive and see if that helps. CD/DVD drives have 2 lasers one that reads CDs and one that reads DVDs, it sounds as if the CD one is either needing cleaned or has had it. If cleaning doesn't help and presuming you have actually tried more than one CD then the only solution is buying a new one. If a laptop CD/DVD is too expensive and you have USB 2.0 you could buy an external drive instead. Just a thought.
