I have a Dell Studio 1537 and I think the DVD drive needs replacing.

Is it a good option to buy an external drive rather than replace the internal one which is a bit tricky to do. Plus I am having trouble locating one.

Some laptop DVD players can be easily unclipped from the main machine, in which case a replacement is easy - you should be able to get the part directly from Dell or, with luck, on Ebay. However, if yours does not unclip, I would not recommend tampering - just get an external USB drive

Tutorial here, means taking the laptop apart, if not happy then get an external.

Why do you think yours requires replacing?

DVD drive makes chattering noise when I put a disk in and then spits it out.
