laptop display brightness

Is there a way of increasing / decreasing the brightness of a laptop monitor software based I mean not via a control on the edge of the screen.

Hold down the Fn Key and F7 to increase Brightness and Fn and F8 to decrease.

Thank you both for those answers; at the moment I don't have the laptop but have been looking at one. It seemed to me rahter dull. In the end I gave up on it.

in a showroom may not look so bad in a normal environment - shop lights can be very bright. Most new machines will have good displays, and it's not really a problem to use the hardware control to alter the brightness levels.

Forum Editor that was my impression there was a lot of flourescent lighting and I was not sure what was the cause of the dullness on the screen. However I have gone off that machine for the time being.
