laptop for camcorder

  Bonynge 08:11 01 Oct 2005

I am looking for a laptop that will support work that I am doing with a camcorder ( new toy) . I know camcorder files take up a huge amount of drive space so I intend to use an external drive but an 80 Gb would be ideal, I also intend to write most stuff to DVD. To the point, I have read reports until I'm blue in the face and am still unsure, Any suggestions. Budget about £1200.

Video edit takes much processing power and memory as well as HDD space

Get as much memory, at least 1G, Min 3.0G CPU, and as large a HDD as you can for your money.

A laptop screen is not the best for picture editing.

Mine is an HP Pavilion zv5762EA AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 80gig HDD 1024meg ram DVD rewriter 15.4" widescreen which I am purchasing through work on the government Home Computer Initiative (HCI)but I think that it cost around £950 to buy from HP

As Fruit Bat suggested video editing requires a lot of processing power so you need to get the highest spec laptop you can afford. Note that 1 hour of video uses 13Gb of disc storage (AVI)also that many laptops still fit HDDs that spin at 5400 rpm rather than the desk top versions at 7200 rpm and this makes a big difference to the speed of a laptop. My 1.5gb desktop is faster than my 2.8gb laptop for this reason. Look if possible for a laptop that has a 7200 rpm HDD. An external HDD even if a 7200 rpm type will still run slower than an internal drive but you should get away with it ok. Hope this helps.
