laptop battery charging

I am new to laptops, and have been given a Compaq Armada 1590DT on semi permanent loan. Can anyone tell me how the batery is charged; does it charge automatically when the computer is powered by mains, or do I need to buy a separate battery charger?

hector710 it charges while connected to mains.

It will charge quicker if the laptop is switched off.

It charges when you power up the computer if the battery is in the computer. But there should also be a separate Charger so you can connect it without the computer on.

Opposite way round according to my instructions it charges faster when the computer is switched on. but you get a better charge if it's turned off

woodchip according to my User Guide "...charging the battery with the computer turned off results in a significantly faster charge time".

It's just the opposite with my Medion Laptop Manual
