Laptop for architect ?

It is time for an upgrade.
I need a laptop which I'm going to use to run:
Vector Works, photoshop, autocad,3ds max and similar programs.
There is nothing worse than when you have to wait minutes when rendering stuff !

So for a laptop to be capable run these programs fast, what spec do I need to look at in particular?
Processor obviously !? RAM? L2 or L3 cache ? Video card? or everything together?
Also, is it worth buying a laptop in a high street shop or is there an easy way to build your own one somewhere, somehow ?
And last, of course there is a budget, ideally, I know it is not a lot for a high spec laptop, but it would be around £500. If i will get extra cash I could consider stretching out to 700ish.. Or is it better to save a bit money and spend a 1000 on that damn macBook pro and all problems sorted ?
