I have just bought a laptop from a freind and need to make sure it stays in reliable good working order. Can anyone reccomend programs to protect me against spyware, viurus' etc.

Zone Alarm and AVG Anti virus from Grisoft, both are free cut down versions for home use, but do a reasonable.

together with adaware, spybot, spyware blaster. and maybe some others that might come recommended

I've been using Avast for over a year now, works perfectly well for me as an AV (and free).

Firewall = Zonealarm
antivirus = Avast4 click here
or AVG antivirus click here (only use one)
Antispyware = SpywareBlaster click here as a blocker + Windows defender (works on XP only) click here as a realtime scanner + Adaware click here as a backup scanner

Avast will autoupdate so will defender
just remember to check for updates on the other two.
