Lap Top and PAYG Broadband

How can I ensure that nothing is running in the background when I go on line with a payg broadband laptop?
We need to use our laptop away from home at very irregular, and short times.
We therefore opted for the pay as you go Orange card.
We had a shock when we got our first statement in and found that although we were only on line for several minutes the bill was huge because something in the background was refreshing pages at a very fast rate.
We have ZA, Avast, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, and AVG installed on the Laptop.

Any suggestions please?

You could always delete *ALL* programs from Zone Alarm, so that each needs to ask for permission again in order to access the internet. You will then know which applications are going online.

mgmcc, thanks, would you say that it only antivirus progs. that run in the background, on line?

Any program that automatically checks for "updates" can go online in the background.

And doing as you suggested with ZA would stop this?
Thanks mgmcc.

Yes. If you delete all programs/applications listed in ZA, each one will then have to ask for permission again when it tries to go online. You can choose whether or not to allow access.

mgmcc, thanks for that, I will give it a crack.
